Robert J Soper: How PAPSA Influenced Sports Betting
Robert J.
Soper, president and CEO of Sun Gaming & Hospitality explains that the
legal situation surrounding sports betting in the United States has undergone a
radical change in 2018, with localities across the country finding themselves
with new options to wager on sporting events.
This
situation is largely due to a United States Supreme Court decision. Robert J.Soper explains that in May, the highest court ruled that the Professional and
Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA) of 1992, was unconstitutional. After the
decision, any state could potentially offer sports betting to its inhabitants
and so far, eight states are either actively allowing sports betting, or have
legalized it and are hammering out the final details. Those states include
Delaware, New Jersey, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Arkansas
and Nevada.
